From the Pastor

We are planning to start a new Bible Introductory Class using the Jeff Cavin’s Bible timeline series.  The class will begin sometime in late January and will take place on most Mondays (not holidays).  I have asked Fr. Daniel to help organize this study.  The class is really video driven, so it will not be taught, per se, by priests.  However, depending on how well attended it is, there are possible lectures in the not too distant future.

 

What gives you joy?  Today’s second reading gives a recommended list of musts for a person who should be joyful.  Many Catholics, like most people in our society, only look at things like money, entertainment, success, sports, sex, good health as worthy of being joyful.  No wonder many people are depressed!  We are constantly grasping for things that enslave us!  How ironic that society calls Christianity a cult because we seek to be free from worldly traps!  

 

Look at Mary’s life.  As a poor Jewish girl, she had virtually nothing.  And yet, in the psalm today (better known as the Magnificat) she rejoices in her lowliness!  How many people in our world believe that joy is all about self-centeredness, or worse, being respected or admired by one’s peers!  The joy of Advent is knowing that Christ is coming to be united with us!  Only He can give you REAL JOY!

 

Estamos preparándonos para ofrecer un curso básico de la biblia.  Vamos a usar los libros del Little Rock.   Para los interesados, comenzaremos en febrero todos los martes.  El curso explicará cómo es que la bible se compuso y para mejor entender como la iglesia decidió cuales fueron los libros que son inspirados.  Después de esta curso, podemos elegir algunos libros o epístolas específicos para estudió.  

 

¿Cuáles son las cosas que te dan la felicidad?  En la segunda lectura, San Pablo nos invita a reconocer algunas características de personal que son felices.  Lamentablemente, pocos Católicos ven eso como cosas importantes.  Hoy día, lo más importante en la cultura son cosas como la fama, el lucro, el reconocimiento, la buena vida, los deportes, y el sexo.  Con razón la gente se deprime tanto, porque esas cosas esclavizan.  Es un poco cómico que la cultura llama a la cristiandad un culto porque desea ser liberada de las ataduras del mundo para poder servir.

 

Si observamos la vida de la Virgen María, sabemos que no poseía nada.  Sin embargo, en el salmo de hoy, llamado la Magnifica, ella regocija por su humildad.  Cuántos piensan que la felicidad tiene que ver con poseer las cosas, o peor, que lo más importante es ser admirado o reconocido por otros.  El gozo del Adviento es el reconocimiento que Jesús viene para unirse con nosotros.  Él es el único que nos puede dar el gozo que perdura.

 

 

Hay varios eventos que deseaba mencionar. El primero es la reunión de los feligreses estilo de preguntas y respuestas el 21 de noviembre a las 7 pm en el gimnasio.  Voy a discutir varios aspectos sobre la condición de la parroquia y también la renovación del santuario.  Vamos a ofrecer servicio de traducción inmediata por medio de audífonos.  Pero cualquier persona que desea preguntar en español lo puede hacer.

 

También me gustaría ir de viaje en un peregrinaje mariano el 24 de noviembre.  Ó sea, el dia después de Acción de Gracias.  En vez de estar comprando más casos en venta, iremos a tres de las 12 parroquias o misiones de la diócesis de Arlington.  Comenzaremos con la Iglesia de Nuestra Sra del Valle en Luray.  Luego visitaremos la Misión de la Sra. de la Shenandoah, y almorzaremos en el pueblito de Madison.  Finalmente, completaremos nuestro peregrinaje en la Iglesia de Nuestra Sra.  de Blue Ridge.

 

Finalmente, deseo agradecer al Sr. Alex Cusati por hacer tan gran labor de conectar las luces en el camino de rosario.  Se ve precioso el bosque por la noche ya que esta todo tan prendido. Una puede pasar en mediación hasta por las tardes cuando está oscuro.

 

El Padre Juan Espino, djcm, ofrecerá una Misión el 2 de diciembre desde las 9:30 hasta las 1:30 pm en el Salon de Creedon.  Ojalá puedan comenzar el tiempo de adviento con contemplaciónón.

     In today’s society, young people are encouraged to take on role models such as sports professionals, or perhaps some wealthy individual like Bill Gates or Elon Musk.  Today’s second reading speaks about a different sort of role modeling:  the modeling of the faith.

     In the letter to the Thessalonians, Saint Paul expresses gratitude for the fact that they became “imitators of us and of the Lord (Thess 1:6).  The Thessalonians, in turn, became the model for all believers. 

     I wonder how often parents encourage their children to be imitators of Christ.  Sadly, when I look around sometimes during the mass, I see fathers looking disinterested in the mass, sometimes even conversing with their spouse or children.   It makes no difference how powerful a homily is preached, it will not produce its desired result on uninterested minds.

     Our Advent Mission will be preached by Fr. Bill Garrott, OP.  He is a well-respected retreat master in the United States.  The Mission will be on November 27-29.  I hope you will join us. It is a great way to enter into the Advent Season.

     En nuestra cultura, los jovenes a veces adoptan modelos.  Por ejemplo, les gusta los deportistas profesionales, o quizás una persona con mucho dinero y éxito como los billionarios Bill Gates o Elon Musk.  Pero la segunda lectura de hoy nos habla sobre un modelo muy diferente a los de hoy: el modelo de la fe.

     En la carta a los Tesalonicenses, San Pablo le agradece al pueblo ya que ellos  “se hicieron imitadores nuestros y del Señor (Tel 1:6).  Los Tesalonicenses, en turno, se convirtieron en un ejemplo para todos los creyentes. 

     A veces me pregunto cuántas veces los padres animan a sus niños para que sean imitadores de Cristo.  Tristemente, a cuando miro durante la misa, veo algunos padres aburridos durante la misa, y a veces hasta hablando con sus esposas ó hijos en medio de la misa.  Pienso que no importa cuán emocionante sea la homilía, no producirá su efecto en las mentes no interesadas.

I hope you will come by our Trunk or Treat celebration after the masses this Sunday.  It is sure to be a frighteningly fun time.  We begin at 2 pm.  Wear your favorite costume, or just come to enjoy the food and the well-designed trunks.

It is actually pretty scary how often the Pharisees want to make Jesus trip over His own words by attempting to flatter Him like they try in today’s Gospel.  But Jesus knows everything about them, in fact He has created each person: “I have called you by your name (Is. 45:4).”  We think we know ourselves and will often deceive ourselves about our own behaviors (it’s called rationalization).

But God loves us.  He does not want us to let anything come between He and us.  Money and the desire for success are not bad per se, but when they replace the time we have to spend with God and our families, that will ultimately wound us dearly.

Ojalá nos acompañen este domingo para nuestra celebración de disfraces y diseños de los baúles de los carros.  Comenzamos a las 2 pm este domingo.  Hay hamburguesas y perros calientes. 

Es asombrante como los fariseos tratan de engañar a Jesus, tratando de adularlo falsamente en el Evangelio de hoy.  Pero Jesús los conoce.  De hecho, Jesus nos ha creado “te llame por tu nombre” (Is. 45:4).  A veces creemos que nos conocemos a nosotros mismos y racionalizamos nuestros hechos.

Pero Dios nos ama.  El no quiere que nada impida entre nosotros y su amor.  El lucro y el deseo que es el éxito no son cosas malas por si, pero cuando reemplazan el tiempo que tenemos con El Señor o nuestras familias, nos afectaria bastante.

Please join Fr. Daniel, Fr. David, and me to attend the diocesan pilgrimage on October 7, 2023.  We are going to the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine and the Lourdes Grotto in Emmitsburg with Bishop Burbidge, we leave at 7 am and will return by 6 pm.  Cost is $25 per person and $40 per family.

As you know, early voting has begun taking place in the State of Virginia already.  I wanted to make a voting registration table available this year, but was dissuaded by some as controversial and that it might be seen as being "partisan."  First of all, people who do vote registering take a sworn oath to be completely non-partisan.  Someone also mentioned to me about the separation of Church and State.  This is confused talk based on a lack of understanding of how our Republic works.  Our Bishops continue to speak about the importance awareness of the issues that concern our Nation and our State.   We have a sacred duty as members of our Nation to become informed. This upcoming election in October does not have a presidential ballot, but it does have every single member of our Virginia House of Commons and Senate on the ballot.

Por acompañe al Padre Daniel, el Padre David y su servidor al peregrinaje diocesano el 7 de octubre, 2023.  Iremos con el Monseñor Burbidge al Santuario de Santa Isabel Ann Seton y la gruta de Nuestra Sra de Lourdes en Emmitsburg.  Saldremos a las 7 am y regresaremos a las 6 pm.  El costo es $25 por persona y $40 por familia.

Como ya saben, el Estado de Virginia ha comenzado a aceptar votos para la elección de octubre.  Yo quería ofrecer la oportunidad de registrar en la parroquia, pero algunos me dijeron que la iglesia se podía ver siedo particular a un partido político u otro al permitir registración.  Los agentes de registracion hacen un juramento para ser imparciales durante la registracion.  Otro me menciono la importancia de la separación del estado y la Iglesia.  Eso es otro malentendido que mucha gente escucha .  La realidad es que nuestros obispos continúan a exhortar a las gentes que se informen sobre los temas importantes de nuestra Nacion y el Estado.  Tenemos una obligación como Católicos a informarnos de los temas que afectan a nuestro estado.  Este año, las elecciones no son para el Presidente o el Congreso, pero todos los diputados del congreso estatal tienen que postularse.

I want to acknowledge a number of individuals who truly shined during the Festival.  Many people worked very hard, but these planned all of the aspects of the Festival.  First of all, I want to say thank you to Robert Ham and Ariel Sandy for saying yes to being the co-Chairs of the magnificent Festival.  Here are the rest of the Festival Coordinators:

The Festival was a success despite the high amount of rainfall on Saturday.  What amazed me the most was how the volunteers who worked at the food tents did not become discouraged despite buckets of water coming down!  We will have the financial results of the Festival shortly.

I also want to personally acknowledge Mr. Jose Amaya, and his family, once again for their volunteerism.  He responded to my request to help put up a new sign (a second one) at the Ferndale Road entrance.  Thank you Jose and your family!  I also wish to thank Mr. Abroh Assoumou for accepting become our parish representative to the Diocesan Ecological Initiative.  I also want to thank Mr. Wilmer Torres and Mr. Rafael Hernandez for being the parish representatives at the quarterly meetings at the Spanish Apostolate.

Deseo agradecer a un número de voluntarios que brillaron durante el Festival este año.  Muchos trabajaron fuerte, pero las personas indicadas arriba planearon muchos detalles del Festival.  Ariel Sandy y Robert Ham fueron los co-capitanes del equipo de coordinación.  Los nombres de los coordinadores están escritos arriba.

A pesar de la lluvia tan copiosa, los que trabajaban lo hicieron con afán.  Tendremos los resultados monetarios del Festival muy pronto.

I am taking a weekend off to rest before the Festival. Please welcome Rev. Frank Tinajero, a Divine Word Missionary priest who will be conducting the Mission Cooperative Appeal this weekend. He will preach at all masses. If you would like to write a check to them, please write it to "Holy Family" and then put the letters "MCP" on the memo line.

Today's Gospel reading reminds me of what used to pass as dog food when I was growing up.  We used to feed our dog, "Lucas", Alpo food. Nowadays, many people feed their pets what might be justified as "cuisine:" Prime meat cuts, salmon and other tantalizing meals! Oh, to be a dog in the 21st century!

Now, look around you! You might see at the Table of the Lord people you might see by their appearance as undesirable (someone recently used the word "deplorable!"). And yet, they are also worthy of God's love, just like you! God continues to find a place in his covenant for people who in some way or another did not belong there but wanted to be there (Bergsma, The Word of the Lord, 20th Sunday).

On this Transfiguration Sunday , we are extremely privileged to welcome Bishop Bolaños from the Diocese of Zacatelocula, El Salvador.  He will be the main celebrant at the 1 pm Mass today.  It is an honor to have him here for this celebration of the Titular Feast of the country of El Salvador.  Everyone is welcome to join us for a family celebration immediately after the 1 pm Mass outside of Griffin Hall.   We will have food, games and music.

The Holy Family Fun Festival is only five weeks away.  Tickets are on sale next week for a great time of games, food choices, and we continue to improve the location of the children’s areas.  Remember for every $20 card you purchase during the presales after the weekend masses, you get a complimentary $5 Fun Card! Who would not love for God to reveal Himself in a dream and ask us to tell Him what we want!  The incredible amount of self-restraint that Solomon possesses is a lesson for all of us!   It does take great Wisdom to understand Jesus’ parables today!  At least one parable seems counterintuitive. Why would a person sell EVERYTHING one has to buy one pearl? 

But it goes to demonstrate that the way of God is not like what human logic or reason dictates.  People often make the case that the Kingdom of God is as easy to gain as an ice cream Sunday! (i.e. all dogs go to heaven).  The question is:  are you willing to give up everything you have to get that Ice Cream Sunday?

¿A quien no le encantaría que Dios se le aparezca en un sueño pidiendo que le diga a El lo que deseamos?  El gran poder de contenerse de Salomón es una enseñanza para nosotros.  Se requiere mucha sabiduría para poder comprender la parábola de Jesus de hoy.  ¿Como será posible que una persona lo vende todo para comprar una perla?
Lo que eso significa es que la manera de pensar del Señor es diferente a la lógica humana.  A veces, la gente piensa que el Reino De Dios es tan fácil de obtener como si una quisiera un helado.  Sin embargo, la pregunta esencial del asunto es: ¿para poder disfrutar de ese helado, estas dispuesto a sacrificarlo y venderlo todo?

We ought not be surprised when we encounter hypocrisy amongst the members of the Catholic Church (to include clergy!).  I say that because many people would like to have a church that is pure and free from disorder.  But the Kingdom of God on earth- that is, The Church- is a messy institution.  It is by design.  God intends for the good elements and the bad to be together.  That God will purge all of the bad actors at the very end is mysterious.  But, if we are honest about our own actions, I am sure we can find that at some time or another, we have been like the weeds which Jesus described in the Gospel.  It is good to know that God is infinitely patient with our own failures.

There’s an APP for that!  We are completing our creation of the parish app.  You will be able to download the app on the Apple Store or the Google store very soon.  It will be filled with information regarding parish events, school events, online payments and we will send important messages via the app to those who permit notifications.  More details as they become available. 

No nos debemos quedar sorprendidos cuando encontramos hipocresía de parte de la gente en la iglesia católica (y también los cleros).  Les digo eso por que a veces nosotros nos gustaría que la iglesia este purificada de todos aquellos “impuros.” Pero el Reino de Dios en la tierra – me refiero a la iglesia- es todo un asunto imperfecto.  Pero es por razón diseñada por Dios de esa manera.  Es Su intención que los buenos y los malos están juntos.  Y es porque Dios separara lo que es bueno de lo malo al final del tiempo.  Es un misterio como Dios maneja su Reino.  Sin embargo, si somos honestos unos con los otros, sabemos que a veces nosotros nos comportamos como cizaña también, ¿verdad?  Es maravillosos saber que Dios es paciente con nuestras debilidades.

Existe una aplicación para eso.  Estamos terminando nuestra aplicación para los celulares.  Eso quiere decir que lo podrán descargar a su teléfono.  La aplicación es particular a nuestra iglesia.  Tendrá información sobre los eventos diarios, información para la escuela y también podemos mandar información al momento si usted permite que le mandemos notificaciones llamadas “PUSH (PUSH NOTIFICATIONS).  Mas detalles cuando estén disponibles.

One of the trickiest things about weeds is that they sometimes are difficult to discern at the onset just what they are.  Some look a lot like real flowers when they first come out.  So, you have to wait to see what comes of it.  By the time you see the sprout, of course, it is already everywhere at once.

Someone was telling me about bindweed. Ever heard of it?  It twines around other plant stems, smothering them in the process. They are not easy to remove as they persist from a perennial root system.  You must be so careful because if you do not get it right, it will just continue to thrive.  

Sometimes, the affairs of the world can be like that bindweed.  We all got the part down about the importance of Christ in our lives.  But we become so absorbed about what will we eat, how will we be entertained, how is my 401(k) that we let the bindweed proliferate.  Sometimes, we don’t go to the root of the problem, and so we never really grow to give a hundredfold.  Stop worrying about what you have or what you want!  These ‘things” mean absolutely nothing when compared with the Eternal Life.   Be a real disciple.

Just a friendly reminder that when you receive the Precious Body in the hand during the Mass, you are to consume the Host in front of the minister who has handed It to you.  Please do not bring the Precious Body in your hands to dip it in the Precious Blood that is administered by a different Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion.  We do not permit communion by intinction.  If you have concerns about disease, please forgo receiving from the Precious Blood.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Uno de los aspectos que me frustra mas de la maleza es que es tan difícil al comienzo saber lo que es cuando sale de la tierra.  Hay que tener cuidado que no vaya a arrancar la maleza con la flor.  A veces, cuando uno nota lo que es, ya esta dondequiera y es difícil arrancarlo.

Hay una maleza que ha crecido bastante en los Estados Unidos. Creo que se traduce a significar “enredadera.”  A veces, crece casi por debajo del terreno sin ser reconocida.  Luego, atrapa las flores y se enreda.  Les quita la luz del sol.  Si no la estirpes correctamente, al nivel de la raíz, continua creciendo.

En algunos momentos, nuestra vida cotidiana es como una enredadera.  Sin duda, la mayoría de nosotros reconocemos que Jesus es muy importante para nosotros.  Sin embargo, a veces nos enredamos tanto en los asuntos de la vida como que comer, como seremos entretenidos, cuantas inversiones tenemos que permitimos la maleza que nos sobrepase.  Poca gente se dirige a la raíz del problema, y fallamos de crecer por cien veces.  Despreocupece de lo que tienes o lo que desees.  Esas cosas no valen nada comparados con la Vida Eterna.  Se un discipulo verdadero.

Deseo recordarles que cuando reciba la Hostia en la mano durante la Sagrada Comunión, se consume la Hostia inmediatamente delante del ministro que acaba de repartirselo.  Por favor, no camine con la Hostia en la mano para mojarla con la Preciosisima Sangre repartida por otro Ministro Extraordinario de la Eucaristía.  No se permite La Sagrada Comunión por intinción en la parroquia.  Muchas gracias por su cooperación.

In the last decades, there has been a lot of archaeological research in the Holy Land related to King David.  This is extremely important research because some biblical scholars had begun to question whether King David was a real person.  Of course, the many artifacts that have been discovered from the time of the Israelites as a nation attest to a Real King.  Imagine if King David really didn’t exist but was some sort of fictional character!  It would be very odd indeed for Christianity.  After all, Jesus is THE SON OF DAVID!

Some of King David’s successors were not very kind to the descendants of the original 12 tribes.  That is why the Kingdom became divided, and eventually it practically disappeared.

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus contrasts Himself with some of those poor rulers.  He did reunite the true Israel around twelve representatives of the tribes: the Apostles.   Jesus established a spiritual kingdom, not a physical one, with the Pope at its head.

En las últimas décadas, ha existido mucha exploración arqueológica sobre el Rey David.  Es de gran importancia porque recién algunos teólogos han proclamado que dudan si el rey David de veras era una persona que existió.  Por supuesto, todo lo que se ha descubierto del tiempo de los israelitas asesoran de un Rey verdadero.  Imagínense si el Rey David no hubiera existido, pero hubiera sido algo de ficción.  Como llamaríamos a Jesus sino el Hijo de David.

Algunos de los sucesores del Rey David no fueron muy generosos con los descendientes de las 12 tribus.  Por esa razón, el reino se dividió y eventualmente casi desapareció.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesus se muestra como muy diferente a eso reyes.  El reunió de nuevo al Israel verdadero por medio d los 12 apóstoles.  El estableció un Reino espiritual, no físico, con el Santo Padre como pastor.

En las últimas décadas, ha existido mucha exploración arqueológica sobre el Rey David.  Es de gran importancia porque recién algunos teólogos han proclamado que dudan si el rey David de veras era una persona que existió.  Por supuesto, todo lo que se ha descubierto del tiempo de los israelitas asesoran de un Rey verdadero.  Imagínense si el Rey David no hubiera existido, pero hubiera sido algo de ficción.  Como llamaríamos a Jesus sino el Hijo de David.

Algunos de los sucesores del Rey David no fueron muy generosos con los descendientes de las 12 tribus.  Por esa razón, el reino se dividió y eventualmente casi desapareció.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesus se muestra como muy diferente a eso reyes.  El reunió de nuevo al Israel verdadero por medio d los 12 apóstoles.  El estableció un Reino espiritual, no físico, con el Santo Padre como pastor.

Here is the 4^th of July!  Welcome Fr. David Witherow!!  

We seldom speak about the first freedom, the liberty to practice the faith that we love.  The bishops have been emphasizing the importance of this freedom and how easily it can be lost.  Unfortunately, it has fallen on deaf ears.  The concern is that, seeing the churches full of people, that it might seem that all is well.   However, in the last year alone, there been thousands of attacks on houses of worsphip in our country due to intolerance.   If last week’s readings were all about the violent reaction the Gospel receives, the readings today speak to the fact that not everyone is against the Gospel message! 

A couple of years ago, we had a door-to-door evangelization project in Dale City.  It can be a little unsettling to knock on the doors of perfect strangers.  What I discovered is that many people where we visited came from many different parts of the world.  There were Jewish people, Hindus, Muslims, and other groups.  Most of them were surprised that Catholics were going door to door.  Overall, though, it was a great opportunity to make people feel welcome in our parish boundaries.

Our country does has many abundant blessings, the first one being the ability to practice free religion.  There are many nations that do not allow freedom of religion. 

This Sunday, as you enjoy a nice barbecue meal with your loved ones, and maybe catch a fire work or two, please remember to give thanks to God for the freedom we have in our country to worship and bring the Good News of Christ to others!

Hemos llegado al 4 de julio, el día de la Independencia de los Estados Unidos.  Deseamos darle una bienvenida calurosa al Padre David Witherow. 

Poco hablamos en el país de la primera libertad que existe aquí, la libertad de practicar la fe que uno prefiere.  Nuestros obispos han tratado pro varios años de emfatizar la importancia.  Desafortunadamente no ha recibido mucha importancia.  Quizas es porque cuando vemos las misas tan llenas de gente, pensamos que todo está bien.  Lamentablemente, durante este año han habido muchos ataques a lugares de culto religioso en este pais por motivo de la intolerancia.  Si las lecturas de la semana pasada nos mencionaban que a veces el Evangelio nos puede traer dificultades cuando otras personas no les gustan que le prediquemos, las de este fin de semana nos recuerdan que no todos están contra el mensaje de Jesus.

Hace unos cuantos años atrás, conducimos una evangelización de puerta a puerta en Dale City.  No es nada fácil tocar en las puertas de personas ajenas.  Lo que yo descubrí es que aquí hay muchas personas de todas partes del mundo.  Aquí existen judíos, musulmanes, hindúes, y otros grupos.  Muchos se quedaban asombrados que los católicos estaban hiendo de puerta a puerta.   Sobre todo, fue una gran oportunidad de hacer la gente sentirse bienvenido en las fronteras de la parroquia.

Es importante recordarnos que somos muy bendecidos aquí porque podemos practicar cualquier religión.  Todavía hay muchos países en el mundo que no practican eso.

Ojalá usted disfrute el 4 de julio con su familia comiendo un asado, y que disfrute algunos fuegos artificiales.  Y recuerde de agradecerle a Dios por la libertad de vivir en un lugar donde podemos compartir con otros la Buena Palabra de Cristo con otras personas.

This is the last weekend that Fr. Donelan will be here before transferring to St Bernadette Catholic Church.  We want to wish Fr. Donelan many blessings in his new assignment!

No one likes suffering.  Yet, from the moment that God made His presence known to the Israelites through the prophets of old, suffering and persecution have come with preaching the Faith.  That is because evil people hate those who become a symbol of truth.  They become a thing of reproach to their consciences.  And yet, God continues to send people who do stand up to the truth. Jeremiah suffers greatly at the hands of his people.  Yet he cannot help himself and must call out the way in which people forsook the sabbath for personal gain.

These days very few of us give thought about how we carry out our personal affairs on Sundays.  We often go shopping on Sundays, when we can actually go shopping on other days of the week,  We spend countless hours ferrying our children to Select Soccer team games.  Believe it or not, there was a time (when I played as a fullback!) when no matches were played on Sunday. How times change!

I want to congratulate our newest Parish Council members:  Mauricio Martinez , Ed Fairbairn, and Kevin Dunlop.  And I want to thank Carol Krieger and Eileen Marcy for the great work that  they have done in the Council.  God bless all of you!

Este es el último domingo para el Padre Donelan antes que se mude a su parroquia nueva de Santa Bernardita.  Le deseamos muchas bendiciones.

A nadie le gusta hablar sobre el sufrimiento.  Sin embargo, desde el momento que Dios se presentó a la gente de Israel por medio de sus profetas, el sufrimiento y la persecución ha existido en la religión.  La razón es porque la gente mala odia aquellos que son símbolos de la verdad. Les reprocha la conciencia.  Pero Dios continúa mandando personas que nos llaman la atención a la verdad.  Como Jeremías, quien sufre tanto a las manos de su priopo pueblo.  Sin embargo, él tiene que decir la verdad a pesar de lo que cuesta.

Estos dias pocos de nosotros consideramos como pasamos nuestros domingos consiguiendo nuestros propios asuntos pesonales.  Vamos a las tiendas los domingos, a pesar de que podríamos hacer lo mismo en otros días.  Sin pensar de todos los partidos de fútbol al cual llevamos nuestros niños de aquí y allá para que puedan jugar en las ligas selectas.  Creanlo o no, habia un tiempo mucha mas atras cuando no habian partidos los domingos.  ¡Como los tiempos han cambiado (y no necesariamente para lo mejor)!

Yo deseo felicitar a los nuevos miembros del Consejo pastoral:  Mauricio Martinez, Ed Fairbairn y Kevin Dunlop.    Y deseo agradecerles a Carol Krieger y a Eileen Marcy por la labor que hicieron en el Consejo Pastoral.  ¡Que Dios los bendiga!

Happy Father’s Day!!

Many of us watched the Coronation of King Charles.  Although we fought a bloody war to kick the British Monarchy out of our country, many of us have a fascination with all things Royal (see Prince Harry and Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle).  When I was sick with COVID, I watched the entire Netflix series on the Sussexes with my mother who was also sick! 

Today’s reading is about a Royal Covenant.   We are accustomed to hearing about royal dynasties based on one family or another.  However, God is offering the Israelites a Kingship of people.  This royal race would also be a priestly people, much like Adam and Eve had been before the fall.  As John Bergsma said in his commentary about this reading: “God intended the Israelites to spread out over the earth to rule and sanctify the Gentiles (that is, us!)  bringing them back to God (Bergsma, The Word of the Lord).”  Unfortunately, soon after this passage, the people rebelled against God and Moses and fashioned a golden calf to worship in the Sinai.  No wonder God wanted to start all over again with Moses as the new people.   But God is patient with humanity, and so God would select twelve apostles to become representatives of the 12 tribes who left Egypt.  These 12 would be both priests and kings: they would pass this title to their successors, the Bishops, whose duty it is to rule and sanctify the people.  But the people are also part of a royal priesthood.   You are called to “offer to God our bodies (Rom 12:1).”  To live offer our prayers, works, sufferings and joys” of each day is a worthy offering. 

I want to thank Ms. Tayler Siegrist and her 18 other co-workers from Deloitte Touche for spending their entire Friday here doing volunteer work as part of their Impact Day!  Among other works, Tayler and her wonderful group of volunteers painted all of the white road markers!  Thank you!

¡Feliz dia de los Padres!

Muchos vieron en la televisión las imágenes de la coronación del Rey Carlos de Inglaterra.  Y aunque este país pelió una guerra de revolución para extirpar la Monarquía Inglesa de este país, estamos fascinados con todo lo que es la Realeza.  Créanlo o no, cuando yo estaba enfermo del Covid-19, mire las series de Netflix sobre el Príncipe Harry y su esposa la duquesa de Sussex (Meghan Markle). 

La Primera lectura nos habla de una alianza Real.  Y aunque estamos acostumbrados de hablar de dinastías de familias, en este caso, la realeza que Dios le ofreció a los Israelitas se extendía al todos ellos.  Imagínense, una Realeza de veras, establecida por Dios mismo. Al mismo tiempo, el pueblo judío también sería una raza sacerdotal, como lo fue los primeros Padres, Adam y Eva.  Como dijo un teólogo recién:  “Dios tenía en mente que los Israelitas se esparcieran por todo el mundo para gobernar y santificar los Gentiles (nosotros) para que regresaran a Dios.” Desafortunadamente, el pueblo se rebeló contra Dios, construyendo un toro de oro como los que habian en Egipto.  Con razón Dios quería comenzar de nuevo solo con Moisés.  Pero Dios es paciente con nosotros, así que esperaría miles de años después para llevar a cabo su plan de salvación.  Los 12 apóstoles que Jesus eligió representarían las 12 tribus de Israel, para santificar y ensenar al pueblo de Dios nuevo. Ellos, y sus sucesores, los obispos, continúan haciendo esta labor hasta hoy.  Pero la gente también son un sacerdocio.  Ustedes han sido llamados para ofrecer su sacrificio por medio de su vida, y a santificar el día, sus sufrimientos, gozos, y oraciones y “ofrecer nuestros cuerpos” como Dios quería de ese pueblo en el desierto.

Deseo agradecerle a la Srta. Tayler Siegrist y a su equipo de 18 voluntarios de Delitte Touche por su trabajo el viernes entero en la parroquia pintando los postes blancos, entre otras cosas como parte de su Dia del Impacto. ¡Gracias!

With the Solemnity of Corpus Christi (please join us for the procession either at 9:30 am or at 12:30 pm from the Church to Bel Air Elementary today!), we are beginning to prepare for the National Eucharistic Revival Year 2- The Parish Revival. The Revival’s Aim is to “encourage a renewed devotion to the Holy Eucharist throughout the Church in the United States (USCCB Document - www.eucharisticrevival.org I am in the process of asking volunteers to be parish liaisons. We will endeavor to encourage more parishioners to come to our Friday Adoration, and even groups to participate in Holy Hours throughout the year. If you have previous experience in organizing Eucharistic Adoration, I would consider some form of Nocturnal Adoration for our parish. We also plan to hold Sunday lectures for the family on the Eucharist. All of this work will culminate in the 10^th National Eucharistic Congress in Indianapolis, Indiana in July 2024.  This will be the First National Eucharistic Congress in 83 years!   Check out this web page www.eucharisticcongress.org for more information.  The 50th Anniversary of our diocese is arriving very quickly, let us celebrate it with hearts full of joy for our Eucharistic Lord.

Con la Solemnidad de la fiesta del Cuerpo Y la Sangre de Cristo (por favor únanse a la procesión de las 9:30 am o la de las 12:30 pm desde la iglesia hasta la escuela de Bel Air) comenzaremos el Año #2 del Congreso Eucarístico Nacional – Reanimar La Parroquia.  El fin del Reavivar es para animar la devoción a la Santísima Eucaristía en toda la Iglesia en los Estados Unidos (Documento del La Conferencia de los Obispos de los Estados Unidos – www.eucharisticrevival.org)  Yo estoy en el proceso de pedir algunos que me ayuden con esto.  Deseo animar a mas gente que vengan a adorar los viernes, y hasta que los grupos que vengan a adorar.  We encantaría comenzar Adoración Nocturna, pero me falta alguien bilingüe para que me ayude.  Ojalá tengamos presentaciones los domingos para toda la familia.  Todo esto será en preparación para el Décimo Congreso Nacional en Indiana el 2024.  Sera el primer Congreso Eucarístico en 83 años en este país.  Para mas información, vayan al www.eucharisticcongress.org.  Ya está llegando el quincuagesimo aniversario (50) de nuestra diócesis.  Vamos a prepararnos con corazones llenos de amor por nuestro Señor eucarístico.

With the end of Pentecost, the Sundays following are for two feast days; The Most Holy Trinity and the Body and Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ.  Both deal with the inner life of God and how Revelation has given us a participation in His love.

We often speak of the Trinity as a community of persons.  Unfortunately, that can be a little misleading.  We might be tempted to think of God as 3 separate individuals who are each performing some sort of work, i.e., like when a family cleans the backyard.  The Holy Trinity is pure Being. The Eternal Begotten Son is in Endless communion with the Father who begot, and the Holy Spirit is the pure existence of Love between them.  As one priest said on a recent retreat: “The Holy Spirit is the intermediary between The Father and The Son (Fr. Phil Bochanski, retreat at Loyola Retreat House).  There is no more profound Mystery in the Universe.

Next week we will celebrate the Solemnity of Corpus Christi.  The Processions will be a little different this time around.  We will begin to process immediately after the 8:30 am and the 11:30 am Mass, walk along Fresno Drive (it will be closed to traffic during that spate of time), there will be 2 small altars.  Then we will cross Ferndale Road and end at the Bel Air Elementary with a moment of Adoration.  I am inviting those who attend the 10 am Mass and the 1 pm Mass to come a little earlier to process with us as One Community.  The Lord prayed that we will be as One. 

Con el fin del Pentecostés, los siguientes dos domingos celebramos las fiestas de la Santísima Trinidad y el Cuerpo Y la Sangre de Cristo.  Los dos nos hablan de la vida interior de Dios y como La Revelación de Cristo nos permite participar en su amor.

A veces nos referimos a la Santísima Trinidad como una comunidad de personas.  Desafortunadamente, eso puede ser malentendido.  Podemos pensar que estas personas son como cualquier grupo de individuos completando alguna tarea, por ejemplo, como cuando una familia limpia el patio. 

La Santísima Trinidad es pura existencia.  No tienen que hace nada, porque lo poseen todo en todo.  El Hijo engendrado existe en comunión eterna con El Padre quien lo engendro, y El Espíritu Santo es la existencia eterna de Amor entre Ellos.  No hay misterio más profundo en el universo.

La semana próxima celebraremos la Solemnidad del Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo.  Las procesiónes tomara lugar de una manera diferente.  Comenzaremos a las 9:30 am y a las 12:30 pm para procesar unidos a lo largo de la calle de Fresno donde habran dos altares (la calle con los árboles; estará cerrada al tráfico).   Terminaremos cruzando la calle de Ferndale para completar la procesión al frente de la escuela de Bel Air.  Jesus rezo que fuéramos uno como él es en El Padre.

On this great Feast day of Pentecost we want to get to know the Holy Spirit.  You received the indwelling of the Holy Spirit on the day you were baptized.  In confirmation, you completed your initiation in faith where you were infused with the 7 gifts and the 12 fruits.

You may not be aware of who the Spirit is, but the Holy Spirit certainly dwells in you when you are in grace with God.  You would not even be a mass going Catholic were it not for the Holy Spirit.   You can only understand that God is love through the power of the Holy Spirit.

We are so fearful sometimes of appearing to be overly religious for fear of being rejected, or that people who are like that live dull lives.  However, that is the farthest from the truth, because people who live in the Spirit are bold, fearless, and not enslaved by the shackles of this passing world.

En esta Fiesta de Pentecostés deseamos conocer El Espíritu Santo.  Recibimos el Espíritu Santo cuando fuimos bautizado.  En la Confirmación, terminaste tu iniciación en la fé cuando recibistes los 7 dones y los 12 frutos.

Quizás no conoces El Espíritu Santo. Sin embargo, ciertamente El Espíritu permanece en ti cuando vives en la gracia de Dios.  Si no fuera por el Espíritu Santo, ni irías a la misa dominical.  Solo por el Espíritu Santo comprendes que Dios es Amor.

 A veces pensamos que no queremos ser visto como una persona excesivamente "religiosa."  O quizás nos imaginamos que tal personas son aburridas porque siempre están tan preocupadas con hacer lo bueno.  La realidad es que la gente que viven en El Espíritu son las mas valientes, las mas felices, las más amadas.  Porque nada o nadie los ata a la esclavitud del pecado.

Me imagino que ya saben que el Padre Jeb Donelan se mudará a la parroquia de Santa Bernardita en Springfield.  Le deseamos lo mejor en nuestras oraciones y le agradecemos por su compañia.  Habrá una celebración de despedida en Junio.  Además, la Sagrada Familia de nuevo espero un sacerdote nuevo, que se llama David W. Witherow.  Su ordenación es el 3 de junio.  ¡Felicidades al futuro Padre!  Más detalles pronto.

It is hard to believe Forty Hours has come and gone.  Many graces will come from the Adoration and worship we gave to Our Lord.  His gifts are inexhaustible.  This is Ascension Sunday.  As you know, for years now the Bishops of our region decided to transfer Ascension Thursday to the following Sunday.  Sometimes, parishioners still call us to find out what the Ascension Thursday schedule is. Jesus now sits at the Right Hand of God.  But notice that task that Jesus gives his followers: “teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you (Mt 28: 19).  I think very few people can realistically say that they OBSERVE all that Christ commanded us.  Even something as simple and important as attending mass EVERY SUNDAY AND HOLY DAY of obligation seems hard to do!  But ponder for a minute the amount of time that we as a country waste on things like social media, watching Netflix, going to sports events on our phones and TVs, and just plain ol complaining (which is fast becoming the National pastime).   Hopefully, you came at least for 30 minutes to adore Our Lord during the 40 hours he was on the altar. Could you watch with Jesus for just half an hour?

Next Sunday is the birthday of the Church: Pentecost.  It is a great gift to Our Lord if we recommit ourselves to being faithful in attending Sunday mass every Sunday.  Then, how about ten minutes of conversation with Jesus?  Let’s spend time with the One Whom we know loves us! No Tik Tok video can ever fill us like Jesus!

Ya vino y se fue las 40 Horas.  Las gracias recibidas permanecerán por mucho tiempo.  Los dones de Dios nunca se terminan.  Hoy es el domingo de la Ascensión.   Aquí en la región, los obispos decidieron hace muchos tiempo atrás transferir la fiesta de la Ascensión al séptimo domingo de La Pascua.  La gente todavía llama a la oficina queriendo saber el horario de misas para el jueves cuando era el día de la Ascensión.  Jesus está sentado a la derecha del Padre.  Antes de ascender, nos dejó un mandamiento muy importante. Dijo que vayamos a todas las naciones…” enseñándolas a cumplir todo cuanto yo les he mandado (Mt. 28; 19).  Me parece que pocos de nosotros podemos decir honestamente que observamos lo que Cristo nos ordenó. Tristemente, no podemos ni cumplir algo tan sencillo como asistir a la misa DOMINICAL Y LOS DIAS DE PRECEPTO; Pensemos de todos los días que nosotros estamos perdiendo tiempo como en las redes sociales, mirando videos en YouTube, asistiendo eventos deportivos en la televisión, o criticando.  Ojala que usted pudo venir a visitar a Jesus por lo menos 30 minutos durante las 40 horas que estaba en el altar.  ¿Puedes vigilar con Jesus por 30 minutos?

El domingo que viene es la Fiesta de Pentecostés, el cumpleaños de la iglesia.  Que magnifico si todos nos comprometiéramos a asistir a misa todos los domingos y días de preceptos.  Y quizás además unos 10 minuto de conversación con Jesus.  Ningún video en las redes sociales es más autentico que Jesus.

We are quickly approaching the Solemnity of Pentecost and the end of the Easter.  That can only mean one thing:  summer is almost here!  Now, before you pack your bathing suits and tanning lotion, there is still a few things we can learn from the readings today.  The first Reading for today is setting the scene for the Gospel reading, which is about the coming of the Holy Spirit.  Although the historical events in the Acts of the Apostles take place before the Gospel selections, because of the manner in which the Church reads from the Acts of the Apostles during the Easter season, we are given an “aftertaste” of the effects.  And what an amazing sweet tasting delights!  To us, who are more than 2000 years removed from these events, it might not mean a lot.  But the reality that the Gift of the Holy Spirit was descending upon non-Jews (Gentiles) was a really big deal! 

Last week, Bishop Emeritus Loverde visited our parish and confirmed many young people, two millennia after what St. Peter and St. John just did!  There are few, if any, other human institutions like the church that remain faithful to its Founder.  They are the same gifts, the same irrevocable calling, the same mission. The truth of the GOSPEL (read- “Good news”) is that Jesus will never leave us: “I will not leave you orphans (John 14:17).”  Even when you feel the most abandoned and the most lonely, you are never alone.

Estamos llegando rápidamente hacia la Solemnidad de Pentecostés y el fin de la Pascua.  Eso quiere decir que ya muy pronto el verano se aproxima.  Sin embargo, antes de buscar tu trajebaño y crema de protección contra el sol, hay unas cuantas cositas que podemos aprender sobre las lecturas de hoy.  La Primera lectura nos esta preparando para el Evangelio, que nos habla del Espíritu Santo.  A pesar de que los eventos de los Hechos de los Apóstoles suceden después de las lecturas del Evangelio historicamente, la manera en la cual la iglesia lee sobre Los Hechos durante La Pascua nos suple con un sabor del Espíritu Santo.  ¡Y cuan dulce es lo que saboreamos!  Para el cristiano viviendo mas de 2000 años después de estos eventos no nos llena con emoción.  Sin embargo el hecho de que El Espíritu de Dios ungía a los no judíos desde el comienzo es algo maravilloso. 

La semana pasada, el Monseñor Loverde vino a Holy Family y confirmó muchos jóvenes.  Y lo hizo exactamente como San Pedro Y San Juan en la primera lectura.  Hay pocas y quizás ninguna otra institución como la iglesia que permanece tan fiel a las ordenes de su Fundador.  Son los mismos dones, la misma misión, la misma llamada.  La verdad es que Jesus nunca nos abandonará: “No los dejaré desamparados, sino que volveré a ustedes (Juan 14; 17).  Aunque te sienta abandonado, jamas estas solo.

The First Reading today about ministry is essentially how the Church reacts when there is a need.  The Apostles could have easily said that there was nothing that could be done about the neglected widows, since their primary mission was to preach, teach and sanctify.  But the Holy Spirit enlightened them to choose individuals that would be able to carry out this important ministry.  Of course, we now recognize that this was the establishment of the diaconal order (the word “diakonia” means service).  We are truly blessed to have one retired deacon, Deacon Vince Einsmann, and two very active deacons, Deacon Joe Santiago and Helio Gomez, to assist in the ministry.   We also have, as you know, a man who is currently preparing for the diaconate order, Mr. Andy Colon.  

Perhaps the Lord is calling some other men in our parish to become Deacons as well.  Sometimes, the ministry of diaconate can take place in a different parish, depending on where the Bishop sends you.

La Primera Lectura nos explica como la iglesia establece ministerios.  Los Apóstoles pudieron decidido no asistir a las viudas, puesto que estaban enseñado, santificando, y predicando.  Sin embargo, el Espíritu Santo ilumino sus mentes y eligieron algunos hombres para llevar a cabo el ministerio para las viudas.  Nosotros vemos las raíces de la orden del diaconado (la palabra “diakonia” significa servicio.  En nuestra parroquia, hay un diacono retirado, Diacono Vincent Einsmann, y dos diáconos activos, Diacono Joe Santiago y el Diacono Helio Gomez.  Además, hombre esta estudiando para el diaconado, Andy Colon.

Quizás el Señor está llamando a otros en la parroquia para servir como diacono.  A veces, el obispo decide mandarlos a otras parroquias donde pueden ejercer su ministerio.

I wish to congratulate all of the women who will be part of the first Catholic Daughters of America Court in Prince William County.  As far as we can tell, there has never been a Catholic Daughters of America Court in this county!  The Court Immaculate Conception will be set to make history this Sunday at the 10 am Mass, when its founding members are sworn in during the Mass by the Virginia State Regent, Brenda West.  There will be a small gathering immediately after the Mass in Creedon Hall to swear in the Court Officers, everyone is invited to join us for light refreshments!  If you would like to learn more about the Catholic Daughters of America, please visit their web site: https://catholicdaughters.org.

I want to schedule a Town Hall meeting to speak with you about the Sanctuary Renovation (hint: It’s still on!).  I have been spending a considerable amount of time in improving our security posture and that has set me back.  As you know, many religious houses have had incidents throughout the country, so the Diocese of Arlington has asked every parish to install robust security measures.  We hope to have a complete Control Access protocol by the summer.  I appreciate your patience while the staff and the school, the volunteers and I finish this work.

The resurrection appearances keep coming like the streams  of a river which bathe us with the light of the Risen Lord.   Emmaus is, of course, an allusion to the Eucharistic Lord.  What is so striking about this passage is how strikingly similar it is to how a person might encounter Christ.  First, the two are speaking about rumors from other sources.  Seemingly out of nowhere, a stranger suddenly appears who has scriptural knowledge that is compelling.  Then, during the personal encounter, the stranger appeals to Cleopas and his companion about the slowness of their hearts to accept the reality of the events.  It’s been said that the longest distance exists between the mind and the heart. 

Some parish news!  We have our 40 Hours coming on May 15 through May 17.  Fr. Tipton has graciously accepted to preach it.  There will be more details very soon.

Las apariciones de la resurrección continúan  como un chorro de agua que nos lava con la luz de Cristo resucitado.  Por supuesto, la lectura de Emaús es una referencia a Cristo eucarístico.  Lo que es tan asómbrate es la manera tan humana como encuentran a Cristo.  En el primer lugar, ellos oyen los rumores de lo que pasó después de la crucifixión, pero ellos mismos no han visto nada.  De repente se encuentran un guia que les explica las escrituras claramente.  Luego, en el encuentro personal, el personaje desconocido les habla a Clopas y su compañero sobre su falta de fe en reconocer la verdad que los eventos les ensena.  Hay un refrán que dicen que el camino mas largo es entre la mente y el corazón.

I want to extend a congratulations to our neophytes (newly baptized!) who received their sacraments during the Easter Vigil, and to the candidates who will be confirmed this weekend at the 10 am and the 1 pm Masses!  May God bless you abundantly 

There is a long list of groups and individuals who worked very hard to make the Holy Triduum happen.  Out of fear that I will forget someone, I will just say “thank you!”  I heard so many positive comments about the beauty of the music, arts and environment that I was left with a sense of deep gratitude for the hours of dedication you put into every detail.  The clergy and I are grateful for making the 2023 Triduum such a memorable one.

Please join us at 3 pm this Sunday for our Divine Mercy Holy Hour. 

Queremos felicitar a todos los neófitos que fueron bautizados en la Vigilia Pascual y a los candidatos que recibirán la confirmación este domingo. Que Dios los bendiga con creces.

Hay una lista largisima de grupos y personas que asistieron para que el Santo Triduo ocurriera.  Yo sé que voy a olvidar a alguien o a algún grupo, asi que no más deseo decirles, “un millón de gracias.” He oído muchos comentarios positivos sobre la belleza de la música, las bellasartes, y las decoraciones litúrgicas (los altares el jueves y el viernes junto con la alfombra en particular fueron preciosos), y me quedé con un sentimineto de gratitud profunda por el tiempo que dedicaron en cada detalle.  Los cleros estamos agradecidos por su colaboración para que el Santo Triduo del 2023 sea inolvidable.

Ojalá nos acompañe esto domingo para la hora santa de la Divina Misericordia a las 3 pm.

The famous mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal once said that “Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from a religious conviction.”  The events that take place during Holy Week are a blunt reminder of how absolutely cruel humans can be, when placed in certain circumstances.  The cast of human players that take the center stage in the drama of the Lord’s Passion are certainly emblematic of the worse of humanity, with a few rare exceptions (Veronica, Nicodemus).  Even the so-called religious leaders of the time demonstrate a certain cruelty which is at an obscene level.

At the center of it all stand Jesus, silent: the lamb who whispered not a sound.

May the events of Holy Week fill you with a profound conversion and a desire to not inflict evil upon others on purpose.

El matemático y filosofo Blaise Pascal dijo “el ser humano jamás causa sufrimiento totalmente y con felicidad menos cuando lo hace por alguno convicción religiosa.  Los eventos de la Semana Santa nos dan un recuerdo fuerte de la crueldad del ser humano en algunas circunstancias.  La lista de los jugadores en el drama de la Pasión son interesantes estudios de lo peor aspectos humanos, con algunos excepciones.  Los mismos lideres religiosos mostran una crueldad que es obscena. 

Y en el centro de todo esta Jesus en silencio.  El cordero que no hizo ni un sonido.

Que la memoria de la Semana Santa los llene con un deseo de conversión profunda y el deseo de jamás afligir sufrimiento hacia otros seres humanos a propósito.

It is very difficult to do or say courageous things when the cultural forces are at play.  It can be something as innocuous as praying before meals in a restaurant with friends who are not “pra-yers.”  Or it can be as personal as making the courageous choice to stop taking the pill and learn how to practice Natural Family Planning.

Jesus makes a startling choice in the Gospel reading today.  Knowing that His friend Lazarus is dying, he chooses to wait until his death to return to Bethany.  He knew that His decision not to return to Mary and Martha’s house and cure Lazarus would cause sadness and resentment.  No one wishes to lose a loved if it is not necessary.

Sometimes, making difficult choices presently in order to be obedient to God’s Will, in this case, raising Lazarus from the dead, can seem non sensical.  So, for example, in our own life today, we might ask: “why should I follow the Church’s teaching on morality, when I hear about all of those priests who have been unfaithful to their own vows of chastity?”  We do the right thing, not because it is convenient or to virtue-signal, but because that is what Jesus did.  It will never make us the most popular individual, but it will make us righteous in God’s eyes.

Es bastante difícil actuar o decir cosas con valor cuando la cultura esta contra nosotros.  Por ejemplo, persignarse y rezar antes de cenar aun cuando uno está invitado a comer con personas que no creen o practican la religión.  O también algo tan difícil como dejar de usar los anticonceptivos y aprender el Método Natural Familiar de Planificación.

Jesus toma una decisión asombrante en el Evangelio.  Sabiendo que su amigo Lázaro se esta muriendo, el decide esperar hasta que fallezca antes de regresar a Betania.  Sin duda, el sabia que su decisión de no sanar a Lázaro le iba a causar mucho dolor a María y a Marta.  Nadie desea perder un ser querido si no es necesario.

Hay veces que tomar decisiones difíciles para ser obediente a la voluntad de Dios nos parecen no tener sentido.  En el caso de Jesus, Jesus tenia que resucitar a Lázaro para mostrar Quien es El.  Hoy día, a lo mejor pensamos así: “¿Por qué tengo que ser fiel a la ley de la moral de la iglesia, cuando he oído sobre todos los sacerdotes que han fallado a vivir su castidad?” Hacemos lo que es lo correcto, no porque es conveniente, o porque la gente nos están juzgando, pero porque es lo que Jesus hizo.  Nunca jamás seremos los mas famosos con la gente, pero nos hará justificados delante de Dios.

We own a Virtual reality headset at the rectory.  It is called an Oculus (don’t worry, we did not use Holy Family funds to pay for it).  What is so amazing about it is the immersive nature of whatever it is you are seeing, whether it is a game, or a movie.  You can even get queasy just by watching a video!

I think the blind man in the Gospel reading today lived in a sort of virtual reality world.  Those who surrounded him had already condemned him to a life without hope where he was imprisoned.  But Jesus breaks through the darkness of his condemned fate by liberating him from his virtual misery.

Many Catholics practice what I call the “little red-riding hood” type of religion.  It is neither too hot (like many evangelical Protestants with their outward proselytizing), nor too cold (like the many people out there who have left church because they are spiritual, but not religious).  They don’t want to seem too religious for concern about what their neighbors might opine about them. On the other hand, they want to come to church occasionally just in case (could be for social reasons, because they inherited Catholicism or other reasons).

Maybe you are experiencing some darkness in your own life:  a dead-end job or a relationship, or maybe an addiction.  Maybe you feel like your entire life has been one of setbacks and disappointments.  You want to change your life.  But you worry about what God might ask you to do.  Stop being concerned about being seen as too religious!  You can be happy by being holy!  God will not take anything from you that is not a hindrance to real joy!

En la rectoría hay una visora que funciona en el mundo virtual.  Se llama Oculus (lo compre con mi propio dinero y no con dinero de la iglesia).  Es impresionante como la visora ofrece una experiencia tan autentica de lo que miras en la pantalla, sea un juego o una película.  Si uno no tiene cuidado uno se puede marear solo con mirar un video.

Yo creo que el hombre ciego del evangelio existía en una clase de mundo virtual.  Su vida ya estaba condenada a una vida vacía de la esperanza donde vivía virtualmente encarcelado.  Pero Jesus lo libera al romper la esclavitud de su condena y darle su vida libre.

Muchos católicos viven lo que yo llamo la religión de la caperucita roja.  Su fervor no es muy cálido, ni muy frio tampoco.  Muchos no desean aparecer muy religiosos porque temen lo que los vecinos pensarían de ellos.  Sin embargo, asisten a misa de vez en cuando solo en caso de razones personales (apariencias, porque sus padres fueron Catolicos, u otra razon).

¿Vives en la oscuridad?  A lo mejor tu aburrimiento de la vida, el trabajo, tu pareja, o alguna adicción te tiene encerrado en una vida virtual difícil.  Deseas ser o querer algo mejor de tu vida.  Pero te preocupas de lo que Dios podría pedir de ti.  No te inquietes de lo que El te podría quitar o cambiar.  Es posible ser religioso y feliz.  Dios jamás te quitara algo de tu vida que no es un impedimento a tu felicidad total.

It is hard to believe that the Holy Family Fun Festival is only about about 7 months away!  I want to thank Mr. Rob Ham and Mr. Ariel Sandy for volunteering to be the co-chairs for the Festival.  The first meeting took place this week! 

Watching on television the amount of rainfall that has fallen in California recently reminds me of how much we take water for granted.  While living in Sacramento for a year, I recall how brown the Sierra Foothills become during the hot and dry summer months there.  Something tells me this year the foothills will remain green for a while longer! 

Jesus encounters the Samaritan woman at the well, who is seeking privacy in a public venue at the hottest time so she does not have to endure the glances of other well users, who most surely know what her irregular marriage situation is. How surprised to find a man (and a Jew at that!) at the well.  But this is no mere man, He is the One who will reveal to her how her thirst will be completely satisfied.   What was brown and withered from sin becomes green and alive in God’s grace!

Ya falta solamente 7 meses para el Festival de La Familia de La Sagrada Familia.  Deseo agradecerle a Ariel Sandy y a Rob Ham por ofrecerse a ser los co-Directores del Festival.  Ya han comenzado a reunirse.

He mirado por la televisión tanta lluvia que ha caído en California y me pongo a pensar de mi año que viví en Sacramento.  A veces, los montes de la Cordillera de La Sierra recibían tan poca lluvia durante el verano que se convertían en el color de la tierra.  Me imagino que este año los montes se quedaran verdes con la cantidad.  Por supuesto, aquí nosotros a penas nos preocupamos del agua porque es tan abundante.

Jesus se encuentra con la mujer samaritana quien desea escaparse de las miradas de sus vecinos, quien sin duda están al tanto de la situación irregular de su matrimonio.  Que sorprendiad al encontrar a un hombre cerca del pozo con agua (y menos un Judío).   Sin embargo, este no es un mero hombre, sino El que le revelara a ella como será que su sed puede ser completamente saciada.  Lo que era caído y seco ahora se convierte en lo frondoso y verde.  Eso es lo que la gracia de Dios hace por nosotros.

I have spoken about the three-fold disciplines of prayer, fasting and almsgiving as a way of eradicating the three-fold sin of the lust of the eyes, the lust of the flesh and the pride of life.  Here are some ways that one can grow in virtue. 

The end of the COVID-19 pandemic has left us with a shortage of minister volunteers.  We are in need of people interested in becoming lectors, ushers, greeters, food pantry and bereavement organizers, and Faith Formation Hall monitors.  It’s time to get off our couches and become involved in the parish life!  I think my usual ”go-to regulars” are getting tired of me asking them to help me.

Like the transfigured Lord in the Gospel today, your light will shine before others.

Ray Williams and Pat Brostek are the new co-Directors of the Food Pantry.  Thank you to both of them for their hard work and dedication. 

He discutido sobre la disciplina de la oración, el ayuno y dar limosna como maneras de combatir la la concupiscencia de la carne, y la concupiscencia de los ojos, y la soberbia de la vida.   Aquí le sugiero algunas maneras de aumnetar su virtud.

El fin de la pandemia nos ha vaciado de voluntarios para algunos ministerios.  Necesitamos personas que ayuden en la despensa de la comida, directores del parqueo, organizadores de comidas para personas quienes desean un refrigerio después de la misa exequial, y monitores de los pasillos durante las clases de formación de la fe.  Por favor, no se quede sentado en su silla favorita, ayuden a su parroquia.

Su luz brillara como la de Jesús transfigurado en el evangelio de hoy.

Los nuevos dirigentes de la Despensa de la Comida son Ray Williams y Pat Brostek.  Los felicito y les agradezco por su trabajo tan dedicado.

We begin our Lenten journey this Sunday with readings that are very important thematically:  the fall of Adam and Eve, the importance of contrition and prayer, and the threefold concupiscence.  

Concupiscence can be quickly summarized as the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life.  These three were present when Adam and Eve fell into temptation, it is still present today in our lives.

But Jesus demonstrates how we overcome our tendency to sinful behavior by prayer, fasting and almsgiving.  The threefold response of emptying ourselves by practicing discipline opens our hearts to receive the grace of God to conquer our sinful nature.

Many people struggle with addictive behaviors.  When I ask them what actions they have taken to prevent avoiding the near occasion of sin (i.e. – buying a simple flip phone, putting blockers on their browsers, putting laptops in public places) they sometimes balk at such measures because it places certain limits on the things they want to do.  On the other hand, if a doctor said to you that unless you stop eating unhealthy foods you will die within a year, we would readily limit the foods so to live.

Don’t be afraid to give up more than just chocolate this Lent!  Limit the amount of time you spend before the television or the laptop.  Try to have more sit down dinners with the family.  You will have more time to pray and your life will change.

Comenzamos nuestra jornada cuaresmal con lecturas bíblicas que nos ofreces unos temas esenciales:  la caída de Adán y Eva, la importancia del arrepentimiento y la oración, y las tres concupiscencias.

Concupiscencia es básicamente la lujuria de la carne, el ocio de los ojos, y la soberbia de la vida.  Las tres existian al Adan y Eva caer en tentacion y continuan hasta hoy. 

Jesus nos muestra como combatir nuestra carne por medio de la vida disciplinada de la oracion, el ayuno, y dar limosna.  Eso nos permite que abramos los corazones a recibir la gracia de Dios y conquistar la condición humana.

Muchos tienen una gran batalla contra las adicciones.  Si les pregunto que medidas han tomado para evitar la presencia de la tentación (comprar un teléfono mas sencillo, imponer bloqueadores en el browser de su teléfono o computadora, colocar computadoras en lugares públicos) a veces responden que esas medidas imponen restricciones severas en su libertad.  Sin embargo, si su doctor le dice que a menos que deje de comer comida grasosa no vivirá ni un año más, en seguida limitamos la comida que no es saludable.

Trata de sacrificar un poco mas que el chocolate esta cuaresma.  A lo mejor puede disminuir lo que mira en la televisión o su teléfono.  Trate de comer comida casera con la familia.  Lo mas importante es que tendrás mas tiempo para rezar y tu vida mejorara.

We are at the threshold of Lent!  With Ash Wednesday coming this week, we go to the desert with our Lord as he follows the footsteps of His Jewish ancestors for Forty days.  I ask that you pray in a very special way for all of the catechumens and candidates who are preparing to receive their sacraments during the Easter Vigil and Divine Mercy Sunday. 

The readings for this Sunday can be a great source of meditation for our own desert journey, since they focus on the love of neighbor.  This is part of the famous sermon on the mount in which Jesus gives us that new Law that is now written in our hearts as a result of the life of grace: the Beatitudes.

These are counsels for our personal behavior in our life.  But they are difficult to live by.  We can rightly ask ourselves, “Is Jesus expecting me to allow people to just walk all over me?”  And there is the challenge:  we must live like Jesus.  We don’t really live the Lenten message if we are unwilling to be challenged by loving our enemies and doing good to them.  What sets us apart as Chrsitians is that we're called to live beyond the Golden Rule.  There is nothing inherently wrong about giving up chocolate for Lent; but neither is it really that challenging compared to what Jesus undertook for our sins.  If you truly want to understand what living the Gospel message is, pick up your cross (love those who try your patience) and follow Jesus.    

Estamos al umbral de la cuaresma.  Con el miércoles de la ceniza esta semana entrante, estamos en la jornada en el desierto con El Señor, siguiendo los pasos de sus antepasados por los 40 días.  Les ruego que por favor recen en una manera muy especial por los catecúmenos y los candidatos que estamos preparando para que reciban los sacramentos durante la Vigilia Pascual y el domingo de la Misericordia.

Las lecturas de hoy nos ofrecen mucho en que meditar durante nuestra jornada en el desierto, ya que hablan sobre el amor al prójimo.  Esto es parte del sermón en la montaña donde Jesus nos da la ley que ahora está escrita en nuestros corazones por medio de la gracia:  las bienaventuranzas.

Estos consejos son para vivirlos.  Al mismo tiempo, son muy difíciles para seguir.  Pensamos: "¿Sera que Jesus espera que yo permite que la gente me pise?"  Al mismo tiempo sabemos que debemos ser como Jesus en todo.  No podemos vivir el mensaje de la cuaresma si no permitimos que nuestro prójimo nos desafíe sin amarlos.  Lo que nos separa de otros como cristianos es que tenemos que vivir mas que la Regla de oro.  No hay nada espectacular o difícil de no comer el chocolate durante la cuaresma, pero tampoco es algo heroico cuando Jesus murió por nuestros pecados. Si verdaderamente deseas vivir el lo que es Evangelio, toma tu cruz y sigue a Jesus

This Monday we begin our Symbolon series created by Formed.org.  It will be a six-part series.  The series will be at 10 am and at 7 pm in the Creedon Room (next to the sacristy).

The readings for today rob us of the false notion that Jesus was some sort of radical who rejected the moral teachings of Judaism, a sort of free loving hippie.  Jesus says: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets.  I have come not to abolish but to fulfill (Mt: 5:17).  Jesus did take the teachers of the law to task for twisting the meaning of God's law for their own sordid purposes.  Their external dictates did not conform to the conversion of heart that Jesus wished.  But His interpretation of the Law was much more demanding because it was based on the Spirit, who sees even the depths of the heart.

When we experience turmoil in our heart as a result of our sin, it is important to turn immediately to the Lord.  Let Him bring you healing.

Este lunes comenzamos el video de Symbolon creado por Formed.org.  Las series de lecturas y discusión será dividida en seis partes para atraer interés.  Las charlas serán los lunes a partir del 13 de febrero a las 7 pm en el gimnasio.  

Las lecturas de hoy nos quitan el mito de un Jesus como de estilo hombre radical que no creeia en la ley moral sino lo que predicaba era “amor libre o sin consecuencias.”  El mismo dijo: "No crean que he venido a abolir la ley o los profetas; no he venido a abolirlos, sino a darles plenitud. (Mt. 5, 17).  Jesus se confronta ante los fariseos y los escribas porque ellos habían torcido la ley de Dios hacia algo que no era anteriormente.  Sus aplicaciones juridicas no competían con el cambio de corazón que Jesus exigía.  La ley que Jesus traia era mucho más exigente que los de los fariseos porque estaba enraizado en el Espíritu, quien lo ve todo, hasta el corazón. 

Cuando tenemos un combate con un pecado que no podemos vencer, es importante que miremos enseguida al Señor.  Permite que El te dé su sanación.

Welcome Fr. Jeb!

In all of the busyness of January I failed to mention that it also known as Poverty awareness month. The first reading from Isaiah reminds us to “share your bread with the hungry and shelter the oppressed and the homeless (Is. 58:7).  Were you aware that 10% of Virginians lives at or below the poverty line?  For a state with so many riches, that is an alarming figure. We are blessed to have our Food Pantry here at Holy Family Catholic Church and to distribute food to our parishioners in the Dale City/ Woodbridge area.   I want to publicly thank Mr. Ray and Mrs. Pat Brostek for their work as co-Directors of the Food Pantry as well as to all of the many wonderful volunteers and donors who work with them.  

Many people ask me if we receive clothing and other goods to donate.  Unfortunately, we have neither the space nor the volunteer manpower to maintain a clothing donation closet.  However, Bishop Burbidge just announced that the Catholic Charities Thrift Store in Alexandria is transitioning to a free Clothing Closet (no furniture). The Closet will open in mid-February in the location of the former thrift shop, adjacent to Catholic Charities’ Christ House on 125 S. Con todo lo que estaba pasando durante el mes de enero no mencione que el mes pasado era el mes de reconocimiento de la Pobreza.  La Primera lectura del libro de Isaías nos recuerda dice: “Comparte tu pan con el hambriento, abre tu casa al pobre sin techo (Is. 58, 7).  Sabes que 10% de los residentes del estado de Virginia viven en la pobreza?  Considerando las riquezas aquí en Virginia, es una figura que causa preocupación.  Somos bendecidos de tener nuestra despensa de la comida en la parroquia y poder repartir comida y otras necesidades como los pañales a nuestros feligreses en la ciudad de Dale City y Woodbridge.  Deseo agradecer a Ray Williams y la Sra. Pat Brostek por su labor como Con-directores de la despensa de la comida y también a nuestros voluntarios y los que donan que se dedican tanto a trabajar por los pobres.

Muchos me preguntan si pueden dejar su ropa usada para repartirla en la parroquia.  Lamento que no poseemos el espacio o los voluntarios para manejar un closet de ropa o muebles.  Sin embargo, el obispo acaba de anunciar que una de las tiendas de las Caridades Católicas en Alexandria que vendía ropa se convertirá en un closet de ropa gratis (solo ropa).  El Closet abrirá en el mes de febrero y está al lado de “Christ House” en el 125 S. West Street, Old Town Alexandria.  Se puede hacer una cita para ver la ropa después del 15 de febrero al  703-940-7505.

One of the most wonderful attributes of Holy Family Catholic Church is the great passion people have for coming to worship here.  Many families have been coming here for decades. 

We are blessed to be hidden from the busyness of the Dale City area.  Nestled in a wooded area as the parish grounds are, we are a haven for peace and quiet between the thoroughfares of Dale Blvd, Minnieville Road and Prince William Parkway. 

We are trying very hard to institute security measures throughout our campus to protect the parishioners, the school children and the staff.  These measures are being implemented to help us to be good stewards of the assets that we have.  Thank goodness, here at holy Family, we have not fallen prey to acts of violence or vandalism that other churches have suffered throughout the country. 

Part of being a good steward is to be alert to all of the happenings in our surroundings.  In these times we live, there are people whose intentions are not always the best, unfortunately.  There is no security measure that is as effective as the human eyes and ears.   Anything you observe that may seem out of place, a simple alert to a staff member is sufficient to help us correct something.  To use a recent cliché, “If you see something, say something.”

Uno de los aspectos maravillosos de la parroquia es el gran fervor de sus miembros.  Hay muchas familias que han sido miembros por muchos años. 

También es una bendición que la parroquia esta escondida en una sección lejos de calles donde pasa mucho trafico.  Los arboles filtran el sonido de Dale Blvd., Minnievile Road, y Prince William Pkwy. 

Nosotros hemos implementado muchas medidas de seguridad para proteger los feligreses, los estudiantes, y los trabajadores.  Gracias a Dios, la parroquia no ha sufrido ningún daño por cause de vandalismo u otros actos de violencia como otras iglesias los han sufrido. 

Lamentablemente, vivimos en una edad en la cual a veces la gente no tiene las mejores intenciones.  Como buenos ciudadanos y feligreses, es importante que estemos alerta a nuestro ambiente.  No existe ninguna seguridad mejor que los ojos y orejas del ser humano. Si usted ve algo extraño, como fuera de lugar, llame la atención a cualquier trabajador. Como se dice hoy dia dondequiera, “Si usted ve algo, diga algo.”

I announced last weekend that Fr. Jeb Donelan is coming to Holy Family.  We welcome Fr. Donelan to the parish.  He arrives on February 1.  Father Donelan is coming from his assignment of the Mission of Banica in the Dominican Republic. 

This Sunday we celebrate the Sunday of the Word of God (Apostolic letter Aperuit Illis, Pope Francis).  It is very fitting that we celebrate the Word of God this Third Sunday since we are beginning the sequential reading of the Gospel of Matthew from now until the end of the Liturgical year.  Like we did last year, you will see a liturgical display near the sanctuary of the scripture book with a lighted lamp.

It is not too late to sign up for the Defending Life Day on February 1, 2023.  I will be meeting with Delegate Luke Torian (or his assistant) at 10:30 am in the Pocahontas Building in Richmond.  It should be a fruitful meeting.  Afterwards, we will march in downtown Richmond. 

Yo anuncié el domingo pasado que Padre Jeb Donelan llega como vicario parroquial el primero de febrero a la parroquia.  Padre Jeb llega de la misión de Banica, Republica dominicana.

Este domingo celebramos el domingo de la palabra de Dios (Carta apostolica Aperuit Illis, Papa Francisco).  Es proprio que celebremos la Palabra de Dios este tercer domingo ya que estamos comenzando a leer el evangelio de San Mateo en secuencia desde ahora hasta el fin de del año litúrgico.  Como el año pasado, tendremos un arreglo litúrgico cerca del santuario con una biblia y luces encendidas.

Todavía no es muy tarde para unirse con nosotros y viajar a Richmond el primero de febrero.  Yo me voy a reunir con nuestro delegado el Honorable Luke Torian (ó su asistente) a las 10:30 am en el edificio de los delegados (Pocahontas) en Richmond. Después de la reunión, marcharemos en el centro de la ciudad de Richmond.

The Sunday after the Baptism of the Lord (last Monday) is always devoted to the events immediately after the Baptism.  In today's Gospel reading, we hear about the miraculous descending of the Holy Spirit.  For those of us who love the Christmas season and never want it to end, you might call this "afterglow Sunday (Bergsma, The Word of the Lord).

This Monday towards the conclusion of the 9 am Mass, we will have a small celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr with select readings from his writings as well as a light reception.  We hope you can join us.  It seems that, more than at any time in recent memory, we need the spirit of dialogue and communication in our world that Dr. King taught us.

Finally, I invite you to become involved in either March for Life taking place soon.  Maybe you feel that you could not make a difference at the National Level and so stayed away from the DC March for Life (Jan 20).  Now, we need you to attend the Defending Life Rally in Richmond on February 1.  You can definitely have your voice heard by our local politicos in Richmond to let them know that abortion has no safe harbor here.  We plan to offer a bus to Richmond.

El domingo después del Bautismo del Señor (el lunes pasado) está dedicado a los eventos después de su bautismo.  En el Evangelio de hoy, escuchamos de la llegada del Espíritu Santo en forma de paloma sobre Jesus.  Para aquellos que les encanta la Navidad, pueden llamar este el domingo de oscurecimiento, ya que la luz del nacimiento desparece.

Este lunes hacia el fin de la misa de las 9 am, hay una celebración breve honrando al Dr. Martin Lutero King Jr.  con la lectura de algunas selecciones de sus composiciones.  Más que nunca durante estos años, necesitamos la mano guía del Doctor Martin Lutero King Jr para que enseñe al mundo la importancia de la comunicación y el dialogo.

Finalmente, ojalá usted marche con nosotros en una de las marchas por la vida este mes.  Quizás usted no quiso asistir a la marcha por la vida en Washington, DC antes, pero ahora puede (enero 20).  Además, puede viajar con nosotros a la capital de Virginia, Richmond, para defender la vida (febrero 1).  Usted puede participar con nosotros y hablar con los representantes del gobierno de Virginia para dejarles saber que el aborto no tiene puerto seguro aquí. Ofrecemos transportacion a Richmond.

The Solemnity of the Epiphany is the Trifecta that is the events of the Nativity of our Savior, the Feast of the Holy Family (normally the second Sunday of Christmas).  This celebration, together with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord on Monday, closes the Christmas season.

We will begin the video series called Symbolon on February 13.  It is a six part series (a little condensed to straddle the Lenten season.  We will offer the sessions on Mondays after the 9 am mass at 10 am and in the evening at 7:00 pm ending on March 20.  You can reserve your place with the parish office.

I want to thank so many groups for all of the beautiful decorations.  Jeanine Evans and the liturgical space team (Blanca and Peggy), and also Roy Chittenden.  Thank you to the Knights of Columbus for breakfast for Santa, the Holy Family prayer cards and their 4^th degree Honor Guard.  I also want to thank the Grupo Agape and all of those who dedicated service hours to help as well as.  Thanks to Janet Munford and the choirs for their wonderful job. 

La Solemnidad de la Epifanía es el final del trio de los eventos del Nacimiento de Jesus del Salvador, y la Fiesta de la Sagrada Familia (normalmente el segundo domingo de las navidades).  Con el bautismo de Jesus, completamos la temporada Navideña.

Comenzaremos la presentación llamada Symbolon el 13 de febrero.  Son seis charlas los lunes a las 7:00 pm terminando el 20 de marzo.  Pueden llamar a la oficina para registrarse.

Gracias a todos los voluntarios que ayudaron a las decoraciones en la iglesia y afuera.  Quiero nombrar a Jeanine Evans y el equipo litúrgico tanto como Blanca, Peggy y Roy Chittenden.  Gracias a los Caballeros de Colon por el desayuno con Santa, las estampitas como la presencia del Guardia de honor.  Deseo agradecer al grupo Ágape y todos los voluntarios que dedicaron horas para anotar servicio.  Deseo agradecer a los coros bajo la dirección de Janet Munford.

Happy New Year! This Sunday we celebrate the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God.  We will also recite our yearly consecration to the Holy Family.  Thank you, Knights of Columbus for making the prayer cards available for free to us!

Although the readings seem to appear to fall behind the celebrations, the fact is that the Christmas event is so massive the church takes three Sundays to celebrate.  We read that Mary “kept these things reflecting them in her heart.” 

Pope Francis, when speaking about the manger scene, said we need “[s]ilence, to contemplate the beauty of the face of the Child Jesus, the Son of God born in the poverty of a stable," he said. "Prayer, to express our amazed "thank you" at this immense gift of love we have been given." We can learn from Mary

In our age of so much noise and commotion, it is difficult to contemplate moments of peace.  But silence is more than just “mindfulness.” Silence is peace for agitated hearts.  So many people (yes, you and I) have no peace in our hearts.  We are so anxious about things we cannot control. 

Mary allowed herself to be in silence to be immersed in the Love of God.  ¡Feliz año nuevo! Hoy celebramos la Solemnidad de María, Madre de Dios.  Gracias a los Caballeros de Colon por proveer las estampitas para rezar la consagración.

Aunque las lecturas no aparecen apropiadas para la misa de hoy, la natividad es tan inmenso que son 3 domingos para contemplar el evento.  Leemos que Maria María, por su parte, guardaba todas estas cosas y las meditaba en su corazón.

El Papa Francisco, meditando en el pesebre, nos recuerda que necesitamos “[s]ilencio para contemplar la belleza de rostro del niño Jesús, el Hijo de Dios nacido en un pobre establo…oración, para expresar nuestra gratitud asombrosa soibre este regalo tan inmenso que hemos recibido.  Podemos aprender algo de mirar a María. 

En esta edad de tanto ruido, es difícil contemplar momentos de la paz.  Pero el silencio es mucho más que solamente es un poco más que un hecho mental o algo que uno puede aprender con una aplicación en su teléfono.  El silencio es paz para corazones desconsolados.  Tantos de nosotros no encontramos paz en nuestros corazones.  Tenemos tanta ansiedad en nuestros corazones, y hasta sobre cosas que no podemos controlar.

María permitió entrar en el silencio en el amor de Dios.
